Anatomy of a put-out. The offense is batting and the man running in the right half of these 2 frames hit the baseball with his bat. He is trying to get to first base before the defense either touches him with the baseball or beats him to the base.
As you can see - he wasn't even close - pitcher Looper had already caught the ball and stepped on 1st base before the batter even got close.
By frame 2 when the batter is finishing his try for 1st base, the offense (Cards) is already headed to the dugout to get ready to bat next.
