This is also a gall wasp larva deposit, but quite different from the big apple type. The Gall Wasp alys its eggs in the bark of the Valley Oak tree and then the tree surrounds it as a defense mechanism. Talk about a symbiotic relationship! The tree protects itself from damage and at the same time helps perpetuate the species that keeps attacking it!

Valley Oaks also grow down toward the ground at a certain point in their life span.
