Toothed Wood Fern – The edges of leaflets are toothed. Stems emerge in a vase-like cluster. It is found in moist soils. Historically the pulp from underground stems was applied to cuts and the leaves were soaked for several days to make liquid used for washing hair. The fiddleheads are a food source when cooked and are high in iron potassium and vitamins. The fronds were once used as an external application for relieving rheumatic pains.
