(delegate from Singapore )
Priya was attending the All India Hijra Sammelan held at Parksite Vikhroli.. a distant suburb. And in my 52 years this was my first visit to Vikhroli, I write about Eunuchs and Hijras, but have never been to their conference at all.
But most of the Hijras know me because of my proximity with the Rafaees or Piercing Sufis that I mingle and sit with at the various Dargahs, here I must reiterate that the Hijra community is obsessively devout, their religiosity of Ritual is beyond ones Imagination.I met them at Ajmer Sharif, during the Urus and this community with all its shortcomings, is above par in their devotion and charity. They are not lewd, no obscenity, but a time for prayer and introspection.
At Haji Malang Dargah I have seen them dancing before the Shrine, going into a swoon, and these are really pretty ladies in their flaunting gold jewellery and deportment.
At Makhdoom Shah Babas Dargah too I have seen them offering Sandal and Chaddar and with their Toy Boys and members of their Gharanas.
I have been fascinated with this Community, have a very dear friend Laxmi Narayan Tripathi a transgender soul from the All India Dai welfare, she and I came to know each other because of the director Indra Kumar , Laxmi was playing a cameo role and I was styling her costumes.
I was thrown out of the Vikhroli Sammelan as I was attired in Saffron and the eunuchs are very supersticious about Photography and Babas and I looked like a Tantric alright.
Had it not been for Nitin Sonawane from Times of India I could have kissed my ass goodbye, his worrds to the organiser Mr Santosh Shetty helped in me being allowed to shoot.. them

And I waited from 2 pm till abour 9 pm at Vikhroli, no food, just cups of tea and water and the company of the other organizer Raju Srivastav.. when the cultural show started pretty late as the power supply had failed, the Eunuchs were in a foul mood, and many took ther ire out on me.
Some thought I would lock their souls in my cameras, some thought I was from the CID as I carry my Bandra Samachar Press Card that has my picture in a uniform, thanks to a play I was acting at that time.It has saved my life many a times.. thank you Clarence Gomes who is the editor of Bandra Samachar.

I am also compiling little tidbits, news, anecdotes for the people that cant read books wriiten by Zia Jaffery or Serena Nanda.. this is my tribute to the resilience of a Race that has been part of our lives from time immemorial, at births, deaths and wedding celebrations.
I was thrown out at the lag end of the cultural pro gramme by Baby the head Eunuch, but I dont hold this against her as I met her the next day and she and I became Friends. .. she was pre intuitive about how people were trying to bring an end to their conference by planting seditious stories about the misuse of the halls they had taken on hire from the Municipal authorities. And this became a major issue and I know that the Eunuchs also have bad elements in their midst but the entire community should not be targeted for their sexual militancy, kidnappings, castration etc,..the need of the hour is awareness and a healing touch by the authorities towards this minority group.
I am really grateful at the end of the day to have met some alluringly intelligent eunuchs.
And Priya I shalll never forget.

http://hijdaeunuchblog.wordpress.com
