The most violent eruption occurred in 1814 when three nearby villages were devastated. In the village of Cagsawa the people fled to the church in hope of reaching safety; but in vain, for it, too, was swiftly covered by ashes that combined with rain turned to heavy mud and brought the roof down. A part of the church spire is still visible, a fitting gravestone to the unfortunate ones who lie buried there. At a distance the Mayon Volcano is indeed charming, and because of its exceptional symmetry, probably the most "perfect" volcano in the world. But you may wish to approach the Mayon volcano in another manner, by taking a tropical constitutional in climbing to her summit. This is, assuredly, an unforgettable adventure. The climbing is not difficult but one should be in good physical condition.
