our  wood is almost full- considering I entered this winter without having enough seasoned firewood to last for this year, we have cut and split a lot of wood over the past 2 months to refill this stockpile.<br /><br />The guys at work had to remove a very old, dead Ash tree from the right-of-way on Thursday this week. As is the rule, we chip all the smaller stuff and cut the usable firewood into pieces that are small enough to carry but too big to toss into a fireplace without further cutting and splitting. This wood is left stacked just off of the shoulder for anyone to load and carry away. In the past, I have been on tree cutting crews that had people with pick-up trucks and trailers waiting behind us, picking up the wood as soon as we moved on to the next tree.<br /><br />But not this year. After last winters ice storm , most everyone who burns wood had all of the free fuel they needed for several seasons. Not me, though- since the weather turned snowy right after the ice storm, I barely picked up a truckload or two before it was all gone.<br /><br />Since this tree wasn't far from the storage, after I left work for the day Thursday I drove out to see if it was still there. <br /><br />It was- all of it. One of the tress we dropped was a Wild (AKA Black) Cherry tree. It was about 25 feet tall, with a well developed trunk base (the reason why we dropped it, along with the fact that it splits easily and smells really nice while it burns).<br /><br />Anyway...this piece of wood is the wedge that I cut out of the trunk. I probably could have cut this tree without taking out a wedge, but by doing so it was much easier to guess where the tree would fall (we were fighting high winds that day, so that was kinda important).<br /><br />After we finished cutting the tree up, I picked up this wedge and noticed something a little odd- my saw had cut through something shiny. If you hit steel with a chainsaw, the blade bucks and kicks so hard you know you have done it. I think that gathering firewood is just as sweaty in the wintertime, because it's another third as difficult to get the fuel out of the woods while trudging through the snow. Next year, for sure, I'm going to have enough wood stockpiled! <br />But this was also a great excuse to hang out with my dad. While we didn't harvest on his property, shown in the background, he does live just a mile or two from national forest, so we cut standing deadwood from there ~ and sometimes downed wood, if it's not too punky nor too green.<br />The Super-Sport red minivan is definitely not as sporty when hauling this much stuff. You can probably see that the inside is making due as a pickup truck bed at the moment. I'm probably burning up rear wheel bearings with all that weight, but I'm taking it nice and easy on the transmission. We burned up a transmission a few years ago while pulling a heavy trailer, and that's an expense that is no fun.<br />I have Friday off, too, and will be sectioning and splitting this stuff, and then tossing it onto the pile behind the garage.<br /><br />G'night now.
