Icelandair (Flugfélag Íslands) bought it from the US.Army in 1946. The "Douglas" is an aircraft that has had great impact upon the history of flight in this remote country with it´s difficult terrain.

Remember that we never have had any trains! And roads were very primitive indeed when these aircraft were flying, so they were nothing less than a lifeline between the various parts of the country.

In 1947 Icelandair made public their new logo, a winged horse. This design was selected in reverence to the importance of the horse, "the most important servant" of the Icelandic nation from the time of settlement.

In line with the new logo all the Icelandair aircraft were given horsenames and TF-ISH was christened "Gljáfaxi". (Glistening mane). The airplane was replacing the horse as a mode of transport.

Although the DC-3 was common all over the world once, they are becoming a rare bird today. It is actually seen as quite unique for small Iceland to have a flying DC-3. The other (much larger) Nordic countries have only one each. (I´m actually not certain if Finland has one at all)!

But that´s not all - a second Icelandic DC-3 is being made airworthy as we speak. So before long, we will be able to see two! of the venerable DC-3´s flying in formation on our "flight days" :-D

Also, think about this....the first flight of the Wright brothers was in 1903.
The DC-3´s maiden flight was in 1935! That is just 32 years later!
In a little over 30years man had gone from piloting a rickety craft 120 feet to having an airplane that could cross oceans!
I think that it just mind-blowing!! :-D

Just think about it! - 30 years!!!

 <media:text type="html">ORIGINALFRIDAY

This is Iceland´s only flying DC-3.
This very aircraft is actually Iceland´s first DC-3!
