Elle a été construite suite à la demande de saint Charles Eugène de Mazenod et les plans furent établis par l'architecte nîmois Jacques Henri Esperandieu, suite à son décès les travaux furent achevés par Henri Antoine Révoil . La construction du milieu du XIXe s., a été réalisée sur l'ancien site d'une chapelle du XIIIe siècle, dédiée elle aussi à la Vierge Marie. Elle jouxte les fortifications du XVIe siècle établies par François Ier dont le sceau en forme de Salamandre est encore visible sur le porche Nord de la basilique.

Cette basilique, qui est de style néo-byzantin est surmontée d'un beffroi de 90m surplombé d'une immense Mère à l'Enfant couverte d'or de plusieurs mètres de haut. Cette statue, œuvre du sculpteur Eugène-Louis Lequesne, a été réalisée par l'orfèvre parisien Christofle et fut posée en 1870. Il s'agissait à l'époque de la plus grande statue en galvanoplastie du monde. Une copie en réduction a été vendue peu après par le fabricant. On en ignore la destination.

En tout, l'édifice a nécessité 170 000 tonnes de matériaux dont 23 cargaisons de marbre et de porphyre en provenance d'Italie.

Au fil des années, elle est devenue, pour le cœur des marseillais la protectrice de la ville et porte le surnom de Bonne Mère. Elle est l'objet de toutes les demandes des citoyens qui lui font des présents sous la forme de cierges, d'ex-votos (pour anecdote, les restes d'un véhicule de secours des marins pompiers de Marseille qui a brulé pendant un feu de forêt y ont été déposé), de maillots à l'effigie de l'Olympique de Marseille, mais aussi de processions qui ont lieu de 15 août lors de l'Assomption.

I was so happy to have been the official photographer for one of my best friend's weddding. I tried to make classical photographers but also some artistic photographers. It was a magic day for me, a first time than I won't can forget.

this is my 3000th, my 1.000th as well as my 300th and my 1st shot posted at this site.
it was taken some four or so years ago in the Autana area, deep into the Venezuelan jungle, about six hours by bongo, a sort of long shadow river boat, from the nearest river port.
it shows four indians children, Piaros ednia, on an small canoa.
from my point of view, the reflecctions as well as the face expressions are very interesting, but what really makes this shot outstanding is that the childrens aren't looking at the camara, but at something behind me at my right.
this is my best shot. I hope you all will enjoy it.

Cardinal's right fielder (there is a right, left and center fielder in the outfield - players furthest away from the batter) Ryan Ludwick heads out to his position. On an earlier post about him I described what an important contribution he has made to the team on his 1st year here.

The Cardinals really need your support - they are 3 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in a race to make the play-offs - with less than a month left in the season - go Cards!!!

Busch Stadium is great. At the level of the concourse leading to our seats - I can walk all the way around the Stadium and see the game from a 360 degree viewpoint!!
