ST.BONIFACE CATHEDRAL, Winnipeg, Canada.

Across the Provencher Bridge over the Red River is Winnipeg’s French neighbourhood of St. Boniface. This is one of the oldest French communities in Canada, founded as Fort Rouge in 1783. It became an important fur-trading outpost for the North West Company.

Viewed from downtown Winnipeg, the imposing stone facade of St. Boniface Cathedral with its huge empty rose window dominates the far bank of the historic Red River.
The Roman Byzantine style ruin, fourth church on the site, was built in 1908. Its name honours the eighth century "apostle of Germany" and veterans of the Swiss Des Meurons Regiment who settled here. Since the first bishop, Joseph-Norbert Provencher (his name graces a bridge and boulevard here) celebrated the Eucharist in a log church in 1819, the diocese has had a close relationship with the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. The order, whose members were in the vanguard of 19th century missionary endeavours in the Canadian West, contributed three archbishops from St. Boniface.
In 1968, a disastrous fire seemed certain to end the church's position as the cultural centre of the old francophone district. Salvation came in the form of a new, smaller church, designed by award-winning local architect, Etienne Gaboury to fit inside the limestone ruins. (The award-winning Provencher Bridge was also designed by Etienne Gaboury.)
An open-air atrium behind the facade gives access to the hidden, 1,000-seat cathedral. A self-rusting steel roof adds colour and contrasts with the grey Tyndal limestone walls.
Four bishops and a number of missionary priests are interred in the old cathedral crypt, which, along with some church furnishings, survived the fire.
Pleasant, park-like grounds of the cathedral offer visitors a variety of historic sites. Early missionaries, explorers and settlers in the cemetery include Louis Riel and other participants in the rebellion of 1869. Monuments honor the Blessed Virgin and the La Verendrye family of explorers. The former Grey Nuns log hospital/convent, now a museum, is said to be Winnipeg's oldest surviving building.

Our overall winner this week is Brontz for this great image of a seagull being slightly intimidated by 4 bigger birds. This has strong colours in it and is expertly composed, down to the scary expression on the bird in the centre of the picture, just daring the photographer to get closer! Well done Brontz!

The Lost Gardens of Heligan, Cornwall (found a few years ago and lovingly restored / recreated. This is one of the two "mud sculptures", the Mud Maiden and the Mud Giant. Make sure you see them both!

On august the 15th. I visited a town called "Zutphen", a very nice old town at the river "IJssel" in the province "Gelderland".
It's in the eastern part of our country.

been released. According to a spokesperson
of the FT-police the matter is still under
investigation, however the lawyer of QP brought
up evidence that made the early release of the
director possible..

When he came out of the police station he announced
a press conference where his lawyer will explain what
alledgedly had happened and what according to the
the suspect has been the truth about all of this. QP
refused to make any more comments but
"Talk to the hand, everything will be explained"

The Guild Of Actors is outraged about this
lack of justice and protection for hardworking
people and is considering various options
amongst others outing the director, effectively
bannishing everyone who remains working for
him, as well as hiring a private investigator and
getting the case to a civil court.

The Guild Of Directors has let know that they
are quite pleased with the release. The senior
assistend director in charge said "You can quote
me on this...Justice has prevailed once more.
We will do anything to support our fellow director
and prevent the G.O.A. of harassing QP, The
G.Ö.D. stands united in this matter!

The date and time of the press conference

A few pictures for Curves. Sheila and I were out a couple of weeks ago and saw these in a craft shop. We thought - they're exactly the sort of thing Curves would make. vertyical jogsaws of trees, each made in different woods and each mimicking the shape of the trees they're made from. Each links with series of birthdates, too - I didn't know there was a tree for different birthdates. Curves - here's an idea for you.
